
The community of Beselare is widely known as witches' village. It was said
to be haunted in several areas during the 17th and 18th centuries and
even up to the First World War. In contrast with other villages that held
a vivid superstiti
on,
the stories of Beselare were noted down by local writers. The witches
are brought to life in a biannual witches parade. The parade takes place every
two years on the last Sunday of July in commemoration of the death of
our most notorious witch Sefa Bubbels on that very date in 1750. There is
also a witches' monument made of bronze on the market square as well
as a herb garden.
